10×13

February 21, 2009

Why is it that you can get a 10×13 portrait at the cheap professional picture places (Sears, Wal-mart, etc) but you can’t buy a 10×13 frame?  And why is it you can only find a frame in an 11×14?  Am I missing something?

Speaking of picture frames, after almost 2 years I finally have framed 2 of our Vietnamese silk embroideries.  They’re an odd size & I’ve not found a frame that would work.  Until IKEA.  I bought frames for $15 a piece  & they are perfect.  In fact, they would have been perfect for all 3 prints.  I only bought 2 though.  Grrr…  Here are the 2 I framed.

I guess the other will have to wait until I can bribe someone to make a trip to IKEA for me.

Sorry for the cryptic post on Friday.  It’s all relocation stuff.  Everyone’s healthy, so no worries that way.  I wish I could pour my thoughts & feelings out on the blog but I can’t yet.  Things are pretty stressful here & I appreciate the prayers.  Keep them coming.

The Whine was Good, but the Bath was Better

April 8, 2008

It’s amazing what a long soak will do. Everything but the weather looks better today. I’ve not been in much of a blogging mood lately so I’m just going to post some pictures today. Enjoy!

This picture was taken by our Vietnam travel buddy Elise. She takes amazing photos. This picture is from Ha Long Bay. It looks so warm & inviting, especially compared to the sheets of rain pouring down outside at the moment.

Tova has discovered the joys of climbing. Her latest Everest is Mt Kitchen Table.

Gavin was very busy last week making a “set up” of the stuffed animals. I’m not sure if they are at a party or what the story is, but Gavin arranges them so they can have their picture taken.

When Ethan gets home this afternoon I’ll have him pose with his newest Lego City & post that. It’s sad, but I haven’t taken a picture of him since Easter.

It’s an Epidemic

March 31, 2008

So my sister Becky  was hanging drywall in a bedroom & she ended up trapping her cat into the wall.  I guess I should feel lucky that:

  1. We haven’t noticed a pee smell in the ceiling of the basement
  2.  We didn’t have to rip out any walls or the ceiling in order to get him out.

We have discovered that SC/Pablo/Kitty/Toby is a reclusive cat that craves attention.  An odd combination but it’s working for us.

My friend Aaron  introduced me to the wonders of Google Reader.  I LOVE it!  Before, I was spending an obscene amount of time checking blogs.  Now Google Reader tells me when a blog has a new post up.  It’s so great.  I ♥ Google Reader!

We had a nice day today.  Ethan went back to school, Gavin had swimming lessons, & I ran a whole mile without stopping.  That’s twice in one week.  I’m excited that I’ve been able to run that measly distance & not feel like I’m going to die at the end.  Unfortunately, it has highlighted my need for new running shoes.  I purchased these today.  I’m hoping they’ll be here soon so I can keep my running momentum.

Tova has been chatting Papa up a lot today.  She’s been saying ‘Baba’ (Papa), ‘Ah Oh’ (Pablo), & ‘Hi’ a lot this weekend.  It would figure she’d learn new words a few days before her Speech evaluation.

Tova loves her Papa.  She’s been spending a lot of time crawling all over him & calling for him when he’s out of her eye sight.  Her top front teeth finally poked through too so she’s a lot happier.

There is a touching story on Little Wonders about a Vietnamese man who is caring for unwed mothers & their babies & also burying the babies that are aborted.  It seems that the Vietnamese news I follow is all adoption & lately it’s been pretty depressing.  It was nice to see an uplifting story for a change.

Food

March 16, 2008

We tried a few new things this week for meals. One was a roaring success & the other not so much.

Our food success was Pho Bo or a traditional Vietnamese Beef Soup. The recipe was courtesy of Chad & Tammy & Gourmet Magazine. Here’s the recipe with my changes.

Pho Bo (Hanoi Beef Noodle Soup)
Recipe Courtesy of Gourmet Magazine

6 cups beef broth

1 (1/4-inch thick) slice ginger

2 whole star anise* (Can use 1/4t ground Anise)

1 cinnamon stick (used 1tsp Vietnamese Cinnamon instead. It makes the broth a little cloudy but doesn’t alter the taste)

1/2 pound piece boneless beef sirloin, trimmed of any fat

3ounces dried flat rice noodles* (we used bean threads since we don’t have a specialty food store in the area. They worked fine, they’re just not authentic)

1/4 cup Asian fish sauce* (didn’t use)

1/8 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper

1 cup fresh bean sprouts, rinsed and drained

1/8 cup minced scallions

1/4 cup fresh cilantro sprigs, washed and finely chopped (didn’t use these because Jason doesn’t like cilantro)

1 small thin fresh red or green Asian chilie, sliced very thin (we did not use)

1/2 cup fresh basil leaves

Lime wedges for garnish

*Available at Asian Markets

All spices are available at Penzey’s & possibly your grocery store, but Penzey’s spices are better. ;-)

In a 2 quart saucepan bring broth, ginger, star anise, and cinnamon to a boil. Reduce heat and simmer for 15 minutes. With a very sharp knife cut sirloin across the grain into very thin slices. Cook noodles according to package directions. Drain noodles in a colander. Set aside. Strain broth into saucepan and bring to a boil. Stir in fish sauce, salt and pepper. Add sirloin and sprouts and cook 30 to 45 seconds, or until sirloin changes color. Skim any froth from soup. To serve, divide noodles into 4 bowls. Ladle soup over noodles. Sprinkle scallion greens, cilantro, chilies and basil over soup and serve with lime wedges.

We didn’t push our luck with chopsticks but the boys loved the soup. Tova loved the bean sprouts. We’ll definitely be making this again. If you’re local & want to try it, I have lots of Star Anise & Sliced Ginger so drop me an email & I’ll be happy to share.

Our not so good dining experience was tonight at Buffalo Wild Wings. I doubt we’ll be eating there again. BW3’s (as it was known at the U) is brand new in Rural City. They opened maybe 2 weeks ago. We packed up the kids about 6 & headed out. We were seated & ordered by 6:15. Our food didn’t arrive until after 7. That’s over 45 minutes of waiting with 3 hungry kids. Can you say torture? When we finally got our food it really wasn’t that good. We all had chicken of some sort. Mine was a little on the dry side & Jason’s was a little on the burnt side. Thankfully they comped the meal because of the wait. Even if they get the wait time down, the food wasn’t good enough to bring us back. At least we can say we tried it. For whatever that’s worth. ;-p The funny thing was Gavin kept calling the Buffalo on the logo a Bison. Apparently my NDSU family members must be rubbing off on him.

Tomorrow we start back into our routine with a few additions. Ethan heads back to school tomorrow & Gavin starts swimming lessons. Ethan’s lessons start on Tuesday. The boys were trying to one up on that too. Gavin’s lessons are first but Ethan’s are longer, blah, blah, blah. I’m so tired of the constant competing.

Also tomorrow Jason & I are heading to the Courthouse to witness the adoption of two wonderful little boys by our friends C~ & N~. The boys have been in their care since the Fall of ‘06 & all the legal hurdles have been cleared & tomorrow M~ & G~ will be legally members of their family. We’re so excited for all of them. Anyone who says “why didn’t you choose a foster kid?” has clearly never adopted through foster care. C~& N~’s process was longer than ours & it was a relatively clear cut case. Anyway, Congratulations C~, N~ & kids!
