Freaky Claws

August 31, 2009

Pablo’s had his Soft Claws for about a week now.  They were fairly easy to apply & he’s only chewed off a couple of them.  They are freaky looking – I don’t think red was the best choice.

It kind of looks like Pablo had a pedicure

This is a temporary solution.  It’ll buy us some time to make sure Pablo’s worth keeping before we have his back claws removed ;-)

Updates

August 22, 2009

We’ve finished our first week of school & it’s gone very well.  Gavin loves kindergarten.  Friday was his first day with his whole class, &  as I dropped him off in his line, I heard him say to the kid behind him “My name is Gavin, who are you?”  I think he’ll have no trouble making friends.  Gavin also tells me about his day.  So far he’s had PE, Music, Assembly, & Art.  He read a book about the first day of school, wrote his name a bunch, colored, ate lunch, had recess, & did rest time (without a movie!  Our old school plugged the kids in during rest time.  Ethan saw every Disney movie ever made that year.  I hated it.).  He’s starting to remember kids names & he really likes his teacher.

Ethan has had 3 days of school.  He continues to say very little about what he does during the day.  I did pull out of him that they are starting cursive.  Thursday, Ethan & an classmate encountered a playground bully & Ethan handled himself very well.  He & his friend alerted the playground teacher & then told their teacher & I was really proud of him.  Last year he was being bullied & it was weeks before his teacher & I figured out what the problem was & were able to do something about it.  It seems the lesson of Ask An Adult For Help stuck.  If only he could learn to bring home his Take Home Folder…

The other update is on the cat.  Jason is the best husband ever & has decided the cat can stay.  Jason’s very clear that he wants nothing to do with the cat, & I can live with that.  Our goal is to have Pablo’s back claws removed but for right now, we’re going to try these.

Have a Great Weekend!

More Cat Cr@p

August 15, 2009

So,  you know Pablo, the best cat ever?

Yeah, not so much.

My one complaint about him is that he’s nervous & a little skittish.  He has this thing against the dehumidifier.  I have this thing against mold in my house.  Every time the dehumidifier comes on, Pablo jumps & runs.  Sometimes I’m holding him & I get some scratches.  Sometimes he’s sleeping on the ottoman & we laugh as he crashes into a wall on his way out of the room.

The past week he’s been upset.  More skittish than normal.  He’s a smartish cat though so when I was watching him, he peed on a pile of clothes.  That earned him a trip to the vet.  The vet found stuff in his urine & now he’s on an antibiotic.  For a cat, these things are horsepills.  He took the pill surprisingly easily.  I wrapped him in a blanket, Jason held him & I shoved the pill down his throat. I haven’t seen the pill again, so I assume he actually swallowed it.

Last night, I left Jason & the kids at home & headed out to finish up school supply shopping  (Oh the sticker shock!) & get a few grocery’s.  Jason called at the very end of my trip to tell me the cat had attacked him.

Jason, Gavin & Tova were sitting on the couch, watching football when the cat launched himself across the room & used Jason’s face as a scratching post.

It’s bad.  He has a nice gouge on the bottom part of his nose, a bunch of scratch marks on the bridge & his eyebrow.  Gavin had a scratch on his leg, & Tova had 2 scratches on her arm.

I’m still in shock.  I’m sure the dehumidifier kicked on & that spooked him, but I have no idea why he would deliberately go after Jason.

It should be an easy decision.  Pablo either needs a new home or a one-way trip to the vet.  Logically I know that.  I’m really struggling with this though.  Pablo is such a nice cat.  He snuggles, he loves attention, he’s good with the kids.  But he attacked my husband & that really should trump all of Pablo’s good qualities.

Jason wants him gone.  I want to figure out what’s wrong.  It’s so bizarre that as nervous as Pablo is, in the last 18 months he has handled going from the cat of a workaholic & never-home teen, to the cat of 3 kids with a dog, to moving to a new house & he’s never even remotely acted out.  Is it possible the bladder infection was making him cranky & extra sensitive?  Is it possible he’s finally snapped after all the changes?  Is it possible this is who he truly is & we’d better get rid of him before he does serious damage to one of the kids?  I’m so confused.

And I shouldn’t be.  This should be a no-brainer.

Unfortunately, it’s not a no-hearter.

Feline Psychology

July 22, 2009

Pablo did something Wednesday morning that just shocked me.

He peed on the door leading from the garage to the family room.  The family room side.

I could not believe what I was seeing.  My immediate thought was to grab the kennel ‘cuz Pablo was going to be making a one way trip to the pound.  After I calmed down & stopped spitting nails, I realized what he was doing.

This is the part where I enter the mind of a cat.

I know, I’m really talented.

Pablo HATES the dehumidifier.  I knew this from our old house & the solution was the move the offensive machine to a different part of the basement or turn it off, I can’t remember which.  In this house, the Evil Machine runs more often in the wide open basement. Guess where Pablo’s box is?  Yup, in the basement, all the way across the basement from the Evil Machine.  Anyhoodle, he must have decided not to pee all night long & just to prove his point, while I’m watching him, pee on the door.  I couldn’t believe how deliberate he was.  He didn’t hide what he was doing behind some furniture or when I wasn’t looking at him.  He waltzed over to the door & peed.

Eventually I decided to forgive him, but only after he spent the better part of the morning in his kennel 20 feet from the dehumidifier.  I’m not sure if it terrorized him more or desensitized him, but I felt better.

We’ll see in the morning if Pablo agrees.

Dog For Sale

March 26, 2009

She’s a great dog.  She almost never whines to go potty at 3:15am only to circle, circle, circle, circle, circle, circle, circle, circle, for 10 minutes (I wish that was an exaggeration, but every minute I wasn’t sleeping ticked by loudly) before being distracted by a tree or a leaf or the grass & laying down & forgetting that she woke me up at 3am so she could take a dump.  She almost never does that.

She almost never comes back in the house, lets me get cozied up in bed before remembering that she really did need to go number 2.  She almost never starts whining again, this time at 3:30am, only to circle, circle, circle, circle, circle, circle, circle, circle & FINALLY find the perfect spot of lawn to befoul, the spot right on the path Ethan will use this morning as he races across the yard to catch his carpool.  She almost never does that.

Wonderful dog!

Cheap.

Hmmmm

February 4, 2009

I’ve always wanted to do a post about the search terms people use to find my blog.  But I’m too lazy to grab a pen & write them down.  Lately, I’ve noticed a trend that bears mention.

For those of you not familiar with WordPress, they track your blog stats.  Every day I can see the number of hits on my blog, the blogs referring mine, & the search terms people have used to find my blog.

In the last week or so, nearly every day there has been a variation on a theme.  The theme?

Cartus

Namely Problems With Cartus or my favorite, Cartus Sucks.

I think I’ll leave it at that.  I’m feeling very calm & patient at the moment, no need to provoke a flair of bitterness & swearing.

Here’s a few of my favorite pictures from the last week.

Misc. Pictures

January 28, 2009

Gavin was taking his sweet time getting ready for school on Monday.  This is why.

Shaving with Toothpaste

Shaving with Toothpaste

You’d think a 5yr old could handle being unsupervised in the bathroom.  We have such a long way to go before Kindergarten…

Pablo loves a good hiding spot.  I made the mistake of not shutting the cabinet above the microwave & next thing you know,

At least the microwave door wasn't open. That could have been bad...

Jason completely made my day on Monday, I can’t believe I’m just getting around to write about it.  Anyway, I walked into the kitchen on Monday morning & there on the counter was a digital picture frame.  I have wanted one of those since visiting my friend Jill & seeing hers in action.  The frame is awesome.  It holds tons of pictures, has a 10 inch screen, & it even plays videos.  I love it & the kids, well,

I think I'm going to have to count this as screen time

Kennel!

November 11, 2008

We have quite possibly the best behaved, smartest dog of all dogs.

We bought Charlie when she was 9months old from a woman who didn’t have time for her (yes, she named her Charlie knowing she was a girl).  Charlie was an outside dog & we wanted an inside dog.  It didn’t take Charlie long to adapt to her new surroundings & become the ultimate, overgrown lap dog.  We kennel trained her right away & for years, that was her spot.  She loved her kennel.  She was probably more nervous than we were the first night we let her stay out of her kennel all night.  We stopped using the kennel probably 6 years ago.  We moved it to our current house but it went straight to the attic.

Last night, Jason pulled the kennel out so we could put Charlie in it for the 3hour realtor tour.  All he had to do was say “Kennel!” & she went right in.

I guess some commands are hard to ignore.  I wonder why it’s never worked for “come!”?
