Fabulous

September 14, 2009

What a weekend!  The weather was perfect.  The camping was excellent.  The friends were unbelievable.

I love going home.

This past weekend was the Balloon Rally in Rural City.  It’s my absolute favorite weekend in RC.  We decided to break out the tent for the first time in ‘09 & camp at the local lake.  Things were pretty loose & we set up camp about half way between the bathroom & the playground.  Perfect.

Friday night some of our church family came out to make s’mores & catch up while the kids played ghost in the graveyard.  It was a fun night.

Saturday we went to the Old Dairy for some grilled cinnamon rolls & some supplies.  Later we caught a flag football game & then spent some time with a former co-worker.

The main event was the Balloon Glow.  Ethan & Gavin were thrilled to see so many of their friends in one place.  Eventually we tore them away so they could collect the cards from the balloonists.

Ethan & Grant comparing cards & balloons while Gavin reminds me why I need to always carry earplugs.

Sunday we went to our former church, sent the kids to Sunday School & headed to breakfast with friends.  It was wonderful to catch up with everyone & reconnect.  You have no idea how much we miss you!

The drive home was pretty uneventful.  We learned our lesson Friday’s drive & Gavin was relegated to the back seat all by his lonesome.

I felt completely rejuvenated after the weekend.  On to tackle the week!

The “Last” Summer Weekend & a Catch-up

September 6, 2009

We’ve had a fabulous weekend so far & we still have one day left.  Our former neighbors came for a visit & the kids played non-stop for about 9 hours on Saturday & most of Sunday as well.  The boys were so happy to have their friends G~ & L~ around.  They all played so well together & their mom & I had ample time to shop & catch up.  I love weekends like this one.

Tomorrow we’re hoping to do some biking & napping.  Gavin is in desperate need of a 3hr siesta.

To cap off the summer I need to revisit our summer vacation.  Jason gave out awards at the end of vacation & I forgot to post them.  Don’t worry, there won’t be any acceptance speeches.

Wiggliest Sleeper – Ethan

Person who slept the longest – Gavin

Person who said ‘no’ the most – Tova, Jason & I tied for second

Person who said ‘of coursely’ the most – Gavin

Regret

July 2, 2008

I don’t know what I was thinking.

I had a Mt Dew last night at supper. Two actually. I was eating out with a women’s group from church & the restuarant only had Pepsi products. I’m not a big fan of Cola, or Mug Rootbeer, I wasn’t in the mood for Sierra Mist, & I don’t like iced tea. That left me with Mt Dew or water.

Water would have been the smart choice.

This morning I wake up (after being awake from all the caffeine until 3am) with gut rot. My stomach has decided it really doesn’t want to send that stuff through & I know this is normally how I feel after a Mt Dew, which is why I almost never have one.

Someday I will learn…

Ever the last minute planners, Jason & I are hoping we can go camping this holiday weekend. Smart to think of this about 2 days before we’d need to leave. This will be the first 4th Jason’s had off in 10 years & we’re feeling the pressure to make this a good weekend. We’ll for sure do some biking but we’re trying to decide whether it’s worth it to add camping to the weekend as well.

We’re also trying to decide what to do about a vacation. We’d originally thought we would go camping in Michigan but we don’t really want to spend $1000 in gas to pull my parents camper or spend the same amount getting the van’s A/C working again. I’m not sure what we’ll end up doing, but my guess is it’ll be a lot closer to home & involve a hotel.

Camping Pictures

May 27, 2008

Here are some pictures from our camping trip.

Getting a picture with all 3 kids smiling & not tormenting each other is almost impossible.  This is at the IL State Capitol.

Tova taking a break after our Saturday morning hike.

We found the Lost Bridge!

Not sure what they’re looking at, but it must be fascinating.

Gavin mugging for the camera.

Olivia is having her heart surgery today.  You can follow her progress here.  As always, keep them all in your prayers.

Camping Season Opener

May 26, 2008

Our celebration of the beginning of Summer was a huge success. We camped, we hiked, we biked, we shopped, we roasted things on a fire, & best of all, we stayed dry!

Our trip officially started after a stop to my favorite Rheumatologist. I love my dr. He does the quickest appointments ever & since my Lupus isn’t an issue, my appointments last 5 minutes. I’m not exaggerating. It can be irritating to drive 90 minutes for a 5 minute appointment, but hey, it gets me near a mall & a Target. We made a quick lunch stop & then headed to the IL State Capitol. Gavin gave us our first funny as we were walking towards the Capitol. He pointed at a font-like structure & said

“I know where Abraham Lincon was baptized – right there!”

Turns out, it was just a sundial with a bunch of water in it.

We spent about an hour walking around the capitol. We saw both chambers & even sat in a session of the State Senate. Unfortunately, the session was more about chatting & searching for cars (ps Legislators, we can see what’s on your laptop’s. Cute kids, but I wouldn’t go with the Tahoe. Have you seen the gas mileage!?) We left when Tova got too antsy & headed out to do a little shopping. The boys had been promised flip flops & they were not to be denied.

Turns out, they don’t make many cheap flip flops for boys. We tried the Children’s Place, lots of styles, not so great selection of sizes. Target was only selling Transformers FF’s for $8. HA! Like I’m going to pay that much for cheap-looking FF’s covered with Transformers. My kids suffer, I know. We eventually found our way to Camp CILCA & set up our new tent & got a fire going. We were adventurous & grilled our chicken on an open fire. It took awhile, but it was pretty good (& done). We were all in bed pretty early that night. Good thing since the kiddo’s were all up by 6:30am.

Saturday we went for a hike, had an early lunch, stared at the family that was setting up camp next to us (kids only) & then we all loaded up in the van for our bike ride. We rode the Lost Bridge Trail. It was great. It’s an old railroad grade so it was pretty flat & had a nice canopy of trees. The trail is 5 miles one way but we stopped at mile 4 & spent some time at a park & then biked back to the van. I was so proud that Ethan biked 8 miles all on his own. That’s quite an accomplishment for a 7yr old.

The kids were beat Saturday night. We put them to bed around 9pm & all of them were asleep within 5 minutes. Jason & I had a nice time chatting around the fire, roasting the last of the marshmallows. On Sunday morning the most amazing thing happened.

The kids slept until 8!

If you’ve ever camped with kids, you know how amazing that is. Jason & I were pretty proud of our ability to wear the kids out enough to need 11 hours of sleep.

We had planned on packing up & heading home on Sunday afternoon but the coming thunderstorm changed our plans a little. It started thundering a little after 8 & we had our campsite torn down & stowed in the van in less than an hour. Also an impressive feat. We capped off our trip with church in the Camp Chapel & the CILCA Hog Roast. It was a great trip & I’m actually looking forward to camping again soon.

I’m sure Ethan will be disappointed that tomorrow’s schedule includes a trip to the Y & the grocery store. Poor kid’s going to have to learn how to do errands again.

Reasons Why Internet Access Should be Available Everywhere

May 25, 2008
  1. To monitor the weather.  Our constant checking of the forecast for Springfield last week led us to believe that we were in for a beautiful weekend.  Not only was it supposed to be sunny & warm, today it was supposed to hit the mid 80’s today.  HA!  Friday was cold & wet.  It cleared up while we were at the State Capitol & when we were at the mall, but the rest of the day was cold & overcast.  Saturday it looked like it could rain on us at any moment, but thankfully it never did.  Today, it rained.  It thundered for about an hour before the rain came though so we were able to tear down our campsite & get the van mostly packed before it started pouring.
  2. So you can find a Cold Stone Creamery when you need one.  Nothing says ‘I need Ice Cream’ like finishing an 8 mile bike ride.
  3. Because Olivia’s health is always changing & if you miss a day, you miss a lot.  Head on over & send her your best wishes & most importantly, your prayers.

I’ll recap the trip soon.

What Was I Supposed To Bring?

May 19, 2008

Why can’t I remember my camera? Last Friday Ethan had his Parent Program & I forgot to bring it. Tonight Gavin had his preschool picnic & I still had no camera. Plus I had no diaper for Tova & she really needed one. Thankfully other parents at the school were better prepared. You’d think by kid 3 I’d know not to leave the house without a diaper!

^*^*^*^*

I added two new blogs to the sidebar. One is Looking For George, a great adoption blog. The other is a great find of Becky’s, Tales From Labor & Delivery. Check them out!

*^*^*^*^

We’re all looking forward to the long weekend. Jason is off on Friday so we can go on our Inaugural ‘08 Camping Trip. Jason & I set up our new tent this past Saturday to seal it only to find out it was already sealed. Score! Looks like we’re off to a better start already. The weather is looking pretty good too.

Ethan has 3 days of school left. Gavin has 1. Yippee for summer!

For your viewing pleasure I have posted a video of what made my Friday AWESOME!

Late May Update

May 28, 2007
MONDAY, MAY 28, 2007 02:43 PM, CDT

It’s been awhile since I’ve done an update, I thought I’d try to squeeze one in before Tova wakes up.

Tova is doing great! She’s starting to sit a little, she’s ready to crawl & she finally has a semblance of a schedule! Life is good! She weighs 15.5 lbs & is quickly outgrowing her 3-6 month clothes. This weekend Tova was wearing pajamas & a hat that she hadn’t worn since Vietnam & we couldn’t believe how much Tova had grown. It was dejavu, I found myself looking for the cradle crap.

We’ve tried cereal a few times, but Tova’s not a big fan. The boys were so excited about solid food, Tova is much more stoic (read close-lipped). I guess after 2 boys who will eat anything, one who will beg for red & yellow peppers in the grocery store & the other who would eat broccoli for a snack, we may be due for a picky eater.

We took Tova & the boys on their first camping outing of the season. It was not a roaring success. The first night was fine, the second night we packed up at 9pm & headed home so we wouldn’t have to sleep in a leaky tent. So much for all that weather proofing we did last fall… We did get in a hike, some swimming, & s’mores before we were rained out. It is the second time (out of three) that we’ve been rained on while camping in our supposedly water-resistant tent. I think the lessons here are that if you need rain, give us a call & we’ll pitch our tent for you, & we need to start looking at a pop-up camper!

Hope you had a great holiday weekend!

CB Journal

October 8, 2006
SUNDAY, OCTOBER 08, 2006 03:04 PM, CDT

There’s nothing new on the adoption. Our PA told us our papers would be sent to Springfield on Monday.

We had a great weekend camping in IA. We met my parents at Lake MacBride and had a wonderful time. We hiked and biked and made s’mores. It was a great campground and the weather was perfect. It was a little cold at night but no bugs! Now we’re home; tired and filthy. We’d love to rest and unpack (shower too) but Ethan has a birthday party, Jason is at paint ball with the youth group and we have the youth group coming at 5 for our regular meeting. No rest for the weary.

Gavin can now smell big kids and apparently they smell yummy. The things he says… I think I need to start carrying a notebook with me to record the boys sayings.
